News: Spain´s secret to a long life
As one would expect, Spain has once again ranked very highly worldwide for its residents' long life expectancy among the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's (OECD) list of advanced economies, coming second behind Japan for life expectancy.
According to recent studies, a Spaniard´s life expectancy at birth is 83.2 years, compared to 83.4 in Japan, which is well above the OECD average of 80.5.
The positive health effects of the Mediterranean diet which can reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes by 30 percent is undoubtedly one of the things about Spain that make its residents live so long. Spain is also one of the countries with the lowest mortality rates for heart disease, behind Portugal and the Netherlands.
