Villamartin

Villamartin is an area about 3.5km from the Mediterranean coastline as the crow flies. The name Villamartin refers to the urbanisation of properties as well as the famous golf course. Access to the area is via the many modern road links from Alicante or Murcia airports and has become one of the most well-known areas in the Costa Blanca. In fact Villamartin is actually located in the municipality of Orihuela which itself is in the province of Alicante in the Valencian Community.

Villamartin started out in approximately 1972 and is one of the most established areas and golf complexes in the Costa Blanca. The abundance of properties being developed in the area has created a very cosmopolitan feel with many nationalities living and vacating in the urbanisation. There are well over 2'000 apartments, villas and town houses in the main urbanisation but Villamartin has expanded its boundaries to include other smaller urbanisations which have also become known as being in Villamartin; such areas as Los Dolses, Villacosta, El Presidente, Pinada Golf, Panama Golf and many more.

There are three championship golf courses which are referred to as being in Villamartin. These are Campo de Golf Villamartin, which was the venue to the Mediterranean Open in 1994, Campoamor Golf Resort and Campo de Golf Las Ramblas. The proximity of these courses makes this area a favorite with golfers wanting to play golf on the Orihuela Costa.

Over the years Villamartin has become a thriving community, popular with tourists and people living in the area full time. The area has grown to include some of the best facilities in the area for the tourist trade and this is very welcome for permanent residents as well. Villamartin Square or as its officially known Villamartin Plaza, offers a huge array of bars, restaurants, nightly entertainment and shopping. You will find virtually everything you need all in one convenient place. As there are a number of apartments and townhouses which surround the Plaza there is no need for a car or transport as everything is within an easy few minutes walk. The Villamartin Square is also home to the locally famous palm trees which are home to a growing population of African Ring Neck Parrots.

Most of the people who live in the area are western European but recently there has been more and more other nationalities making the move to these warmer climates. The whole area offers something for everyone; golf, beaches, bars, restaurants, sun and a friendly atmosphere with a cosmopolitan mix of cultures.

If you are planning to live in the area you will find the facilities perfect for life here on the Costa Blanca. Speaking Spanish is not a necessity as most places, including the Spanish owned, all speak English and other languages. If you are bringing up children there are a number of schools in the area as well as the El Limonar International School that teaches in both Spanish and English. This is a private school however and as such there are charges.

Surrounding Villamartin are a number of established urbanisations as well as new developments which cater for all tastes and budgets. Close to the entrance to the Golf complex you will find some of the most expensive exclusive villas for sale in Villamartin. The grand luxurious properties stand in large plots and offer very high quality accommodation for those that have the budgets to afford them. However, there are many other types of property for sale in Villamartin which would appeal to other purchasers.

Villamartin Plaza is made up of a square of good quality apartments which are set within mature gardens and communal swimming pools. As you venture away from the Central Plaza you will find more apartments, townhouses and quad type properties for sale from developers and on the resale market. There are some lovely communities which comprise of older properties within mature gardens which feature streams and lighted walkways. Such places as Verdamar or Valencias are very popular. What to Do In Villamartin

As we have mentioned previously, Villamartin has a big choice of bars, restaurants and shops as well as golf courses, nightlife and daily activities.

Take a short drive or bus trip towards the coast and you will come to the new shopping complex of Zenia Boulevard. This huge shopping complex is unique to the area and offers a small “town centre" feel with streets and a central entertainment area.

Or if you fancy the sea and the beach then what better than to venture to one of the Costa Blanca's Blue Flag beaches; La Zenia, Cabo Roig, Campoamor or Playa Flamenca are just some of the beaches just a few minutes away.

If you prefer to venture into a more Spanish feel then Villamartin is a gateway to what people call “Real Spain" Head inland towards San Miguel de Salinas and further inland to the areas capital of Orihuela and pass some time walking around the town. Take in some tapas and a Caña in one of the little street bars while watching the world go by. Venture further and you can enjoy the mountains which surround the area. Some of these have trekking areas and walkways where you can look over the area from an elevated viewpoint. During sunsets and sunrises the views are stunning.

Getting to Villamartin

Access to Villamartin is very easy from Alicante or Murcia airports. Alicante airport is approximately 45 minutes away by car if you use the AP7 motorway. However, this does have 2 tolls so beware. Or you could travel on the N332 to Alicante which will take anything from 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on the time of day. Murcia is a little closer at about 30 minutes drive. You can use the motorway from the La Zenia junction of the AP7 or you can use the N332. The AP7 only has one toll or you can join the AP7 at the Campoamor junction and travel the rest of the journey for free.
